Breede Birds Spatial Data

There is not a large amount of quantitative data available on the birds of the Breede River Estuary. The four main data sources are.

SABAP2 (Southern African Bird Atlas Project)

SABAP is a citizen science database which is based at the University of Cape and contains occurrence records for pentads which cover the estuary, although these are biased to the terrestrial bird fauna.

CWAC (Co-ordinated Water bird Counts)

Another important source of bird count data is the CWAC programme which is managed by the Avian Demography Unit at the University of Cape Town. While the CWAC programme has supplied annual summer and winter counts from 1998, the data have their own limitations.

RESEARCH DATA

The Breede was included in some large-scale counting efforts from the mid 1970s till the early 1990s. In most cases these consisted of single day visits. In 2000 as part of RDM study Dr Jane Turpie undertook a more detailed study as well as an honours student project. This work attempted to do more than just counts, and provides some information of biotic and abiotic related data processes.

LBRCT (Lower Breede River Conservancy Trust)

The LBRCT have also collected monthly count data over since 2018, although changes in the methodology and approach make this data difficult to interpret.

The data available here are a combination of all these data sources and should be used with consideration of the accuracy and temporal consistency issues
